climbing

One of the girls I have been cycling with is an avid climber. She took me to a bouldering spot last week. The place was fantastic – sufficient padding for falls, sufficient comfy seating for in between falls, lots of routes at varying levels of difficulty, camaraderie amongst the climbers to both challenge and encourage you, and a group of truly inspirational climbers to observe in awe. My bouldering skills were not so fantastic. It has probably been 4 years or longer since I have even put my climbing shoes on, so my technique was average. I am several (5-10) kilograms heavier than what I was when I used to climb and probably also weaker than I was, so my strength was non-existent. Add both of those to the fact that all of the walls in this place were inverted. I didn’t spend much time on the wall but I truly enjoyed the few hours I spent there. Will I go back? Absolutely. After some training.

Shakespeare

Logging in to post photos from today, I found a draft post from who knows when of things I wanted to do whilst living in Australasia. From that list, it appears I have three more to go: scuba dive Great Barrier, visit Fiji, and venture into the Australian outback. Looks like I have some planning to do! This was a local weekend for me with Brendan in the US. Saturday was mountain biking at Woodhill. Sorry, no photos to post as I was too close to puking to take in the scenery. I had a ball, but could use some fitness back. Crazy how much Woodhill has grown since we were last here. A couple of hours of riding was washed down with a steak pie because I earned it? Sunday was a walk at Shakespeare Regional Park complete with pukekos, sheep, cows, kite surfers, and a toast to someone who will be dearly missed.

turkey day in Oz - one day late

Brendan and I decided to attempt to cook a Thanksgiving meal with our minimal cookware in Australia (no, we still have not gotten our furniture). It was one day late because we opted to go out for drinks with some friends on Thursday. So, on Friday in 3 pots and 1 pan, we managed to make a feast of chicken (turkeys are too expensive here!), stuffing, sweet potatoes, green beans, gravy, and apple pie. The source of some of the food was a bit dodgy, but dammit it tasted good (the secret was lots of butter and Sara Lee pie). Brendan carving the chicken, our serving platter, and our feast on our dining room table. We also used the good china.
