"the 'misunderestimated' president" - mX

I desperately wanted to scan and post some sections from Australia's mX today (a free newspaper available in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane). Unfortunately, I could not because:

1) I have had far too much wine tonight to care to track down the appropriate driver for my laptop;

2) I have no idea where scanned documents reside on the fruit (i.e., Brendan's laptop that already has the appropriate driver); and

3) Brendan is not around to tell me where scanned documents reside on the fruit.

So, apologies for the lack of images, but here is one example (typed rather than scanned) of why Australians (and Irish) are great.

'Yes we can' have a punt

An Irish bookie is offering odds on phrases that may be used by US President-elect Barack Obama in his inauguration speech.

Punters can place bets on the length of Obama's speech, the TV ratings and what cliche he will first mention.

The best odds on offer are 8-1 for "change has come," 10-1 for "yes we can" and 12-1 for "fundamental belief," "defining moment," "as I stand here today" and "God bless America."

Long shots include 500-1 for "always bet on black" and 250-1 for "Let's get ready to rumble."

I am not sure whether or not I will get up to see the inauguration live (3am and such), but either way I wake up to a new President. Cheers to Obama for restoring a bit of hope in Americans. As for the punters, here's hoping the long shots don't win...

Shakespeare

Logging in to post photos from today, I found a draft post from who knows when of things I wanted to do whilst living in Australasia. From that list, it appears I have three more to go: scuba dive Great Barrier, visit Fiji, and venture into the Australian outback. Looks like I have some planning to do! This was a local weekend for me with Brendan in the US. Saturday was mountain biking at Woodhill. Sorry, no photos to post as I was too close to puking to take in the scenery. I had a ball, but could use some fitness back. Crazy how much Woodhill has grown since we were last here. A couple of hours of riding was washed down with a steak pie because I earned it? Sunday was a walk at Shakespeare Regional Park complete with pukekos, sheep, cows, kite surfers, and a toast to someone who will be dearly missed.

turkey day in Oz - one day late

Brendan and I decided to attempt to cook a Thanksgiving meal with our minimal cookware in Australia (no, we still have not gotten our furniture). It was one day late because we opted to go out for drinks with some friends on Thursday. So, on Friday in 3 pots and 1 pan, we managed to make a feast of chicken (turkeys are too expensive here!), stuffing, sweet potatoes, green beans, gravy, and apple pie. The source of some of the food was a bit dodgy, but dammit it tasted good (the secret was lots of butter and Sara Lee pie). Brendan carving the chicken, our serving platter, and our feast on our dining room table. We also used the good china.
