i saw a 'roo!

Brendan and his parents came out to visit last weekend, which was fantastic! I love it when I have people to hang out with in this country!!

Saturday, I attempted driving for my second time to go to the airport and pick them up. Crazy right-sided driving on the left side of the road. Still incredibly difficult! I must have let my guard down a bit though b/c I got honked at more this time than last. I also got a pretty good piece of a curb (I hope Mark doesn't read this...). It also didn't help that on the way back from the airport, we had 4 people and 8 suitcases in one car. Brendan decided to use his parents as luggage mules, so that we don't have to ship our toys via the boat. I have no idea how I am going to move out of my serviced apartment by myself now based on the amount of stuff in there...

Saturday we went to a few house inspections (Fitzroy) and then wandered through QVM and the CBD. We saw Fed Square, the Yarra River, the Docklands... we had beer and coffee sporadically throughout the day... we had a nice Italian dinner... (I had smoked salmon pizza - yummy, Carol had lasagna supposedly with egg cooked in it, although she didn't find it, but what an interesting concept).

Sunday brekky: I had the biggest and fattest slices of bacon I've ever seen and Brendan had pancakes topped with rasberries and ice cream! How can you beat that?!? Sunday day we spent most of the day at the Melbourne zoo. I saw kangaroos (one with a joey popping out of its pouch), emus, a platypus, giant turtles, strange birds, butterflies, peacocks, koalas... all of the animals were fantastic and I did not feel nearly as bad for them in this zoo as I did in Tokyo. I was the only one without a camera at the zoo and I have yet to see any pictures from anyone else, but check out http://shoutaround.blogspot.com/ for the 'roo and joey! So cute! After the zoo, we ventured to St. Kilda to see the beach and catch up on our liquids, mainly of the beer variety. For dinner we found an irish pub and I finally had a parma. Too bad it was far too large to eat and apparently in Australia you have to be licensed for take away to stock take away boxes, even for leftovers. Note to my Mom, we should split meals when you visit.

Monday was back to work as usual and I have decided that this Saturday is apartment hunting Saturday (St. Kilda this time). I made this map for all of the apartments that I want to try and see on Saturday color-coded by hour of the day that they are open for inspection. I know that I'm a huge nerd, but do you see how many colors there are?!?! Yeah, that's what I said.

In the spirit of the previous photo, and for lack of other photos, I included some from Brendan, Drake, and my previous backpacking trip to Little Yosemite.

My tunnel!

Interesting US sign

This is me on snow, in shorts, in front of a running river with attitude! I love spring in Yosemite!

Lighthouse success

Manukau heads lighthouse was easier to get to than Puoto Point. :) ANZAC day landed on a Wednesday this year. It made Tuesday feel like Friday (which was nice). But then it made Thursday feel like a second Monday in the week (not so nice). Maybe it will make Friday feel like double plus Friday? We shall see tomorrow. For ANZAC day, I went to the lighthouse at Manukau Heads, followed by some beach lounging time and a short walk at Awhitu Regional Park. It was another gorgeous day! My (real) phone is near, so pardon the quality of the photos just a little bit longer. I cannot tell if that is graffiti in the side of the wall or bird houses? Or both? I was promised an island, but the tide was too far out. Picture frame! And some dark artwork in the lighthouse.

Happy Easter - without photos

Photos to be added shortly... Despite having lived in Australasia for a few years now, this year was the first Easter that Brendan and I have had together in this part of the world (due to different holiday schedules, business travel over the holidays, etc.). We opted to take full advantage of our 4-day weekend to check out the far north of the north island. Day 1: We drove from Auckland to Cape Reinga. We had beautiful weather on our drive and, in our usual meandering way, we managed to turn a 6-hour drive into a 10-hour drive! Luckily we left early enough so that we made it to the lighthouse at Cape Reinga for sunset. We saw a lot of sights on day 1, but my favourites were where you can see the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea collide at Cape Reinga and the massive sand dunes from a distance as we wound our way through the green cow paddocks. We stayed that night at the most-northern campsite in New Zealand, a DOC campsite in Tapotupoto Bay. The campsite was fine as we have found ma...
